I had this as well, intermittently.
I took the floppy out of the gridcase (you may or may not be quite as adventurous) and opened it up.
I noticed the white plastic read head was bent at an angle. I used a flat screwdriver to push it back carefully so it looked as close to flat as I could get, put it all back together, and it has not had a single problem reading disks now, and is much faster overall since it's in the proper position.
If the floppy itself lights up and clicks/whirrs, it's good and the head may be dirty/bent.
Otherwise, check the backplane-motherboard connector, the backplane-floppy connector (power especially. It's a flimsy connector.)
and finally, since you have the backplane off, take the floppy out of the cage and open it up.
These isntructions are based on the 1520, so apart from the head being bent, the rest may not apply.
