Well, I reset the RTC, and ended up with a date of 66/66/66.
While it was still cracked open, I was poking about. I noticed the 286 chip in there was the same as one I had, except my other one was a bit faster. Did a swap, cracked the chip holder, neither chip would work. I took it all apart completely to find the problem, and just gave up on it for a few hours. Once again determined to get into it, I put it half-together, held onto the cpu socket, and powered up.
Nothing.
Power down.
Power up, nothing.
Let go of CPU socket, looked around.
Plasma screen comes to life, does the memory count, tells me the clock is stopped/date is wrong..
And..
It tells me there is no OS on the drive, and it loads from the floppy!
So, somehow, there's more to reset than the RTC.
Now I just need an OS.
Good luck to the other frustrated 1520 owners out there.
